In Islam, istikhara is a special prayer that is said when someone wants to ask Allah for help in making a decision. Expecting mothers who are considering pregnancy can also perform istikhara to seek Allah’s guidance in making the right decision for their health and the health of their potential child.
Here’s how to perform dua for pregnancy protection:
- Make the intention to perform Istikhara for the specific purpose of seeking guidance in the matter of pregnancy.
- Perform two units (rakats) of optional prayer.
- After the prayer, recite the following dua:
“Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika wa as’aluka min fadlika al-‘azlm, fa-innaka taqdiru wa la aqdiru wa ta’lamu wa la a’lamu wa anta allamu al-ghuyub. Allahumma, in kunta ta’lam anna hadha-l-amra (mention your concern) khayrun li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri (or “my/our livelihood and my/our future”), faqdirhu wa yassirhu li thumma barik li fihi. Wa in kunta ta’lamu anna hadha-l-amra sharrun li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri (or “my/our livelihood and my/our future”), then tawaffani wa hab li minhu (from it) [the harm].”
- Recite this dua 7 times, or until you feel comfortable or receive a sign or dream that guides your decision.
- End the istikhara by praising Allah and asking for His forgiveness.
It’s crucial to keep in mind that Allah’s will ultimately determines the outcome of the istikhara, and His decision might not be what we want or expect. However, by performing istikhara, we are putting our trust in Allah and seeking His guidance in making the best decision for ourselves and our potential child.
